Rebecca Coghlin, MTI

Hey! My name is Rebecca Ann and I am completing my Music Therapy internship with UB Music-que in Moncton, NB.

I first learned about music therapy when I was in high school. My piano teacher, Carol McWilliams, had found an article about it in a magazine. She knew I had a passion for helping people and that I was a skilled musician. In addition to honouring the skills and knowledge she taught me on the piano and putting it into practice, I decided to take her recommendation seriously and started to explore this career option. Before I graduated high school, I job shadowed a music therapist and started to gain experience with developmental disabilities and geriatrics. These experiences assisted me to make the decision to pursue becoming a credentialed music therapist!

My formal post-secondary education took a few turns and detours, but, after studying music at two universities, I attained a Bachelor of Music from the University of Regina in 2018. Through this process, I continued to keep the intention of completing a Music Therapy degree in mind and fortunately, got accepted into Acadia University. I graduated with a Certificate of Music Therapy in 2021, and moved to Moncton to start my internship under Dominique Piqugard, MTA.

Throughout my life so far, I have gained experience, knowledge and skills playing several instruments, most of which I strive to use in my therapy sessions. Growing up, and into my university career, my primary instrument was the piano. However, I consider the violin to be my natural instrument. Besides these two instruments, I have experience playing a wide variety of percussion instruments, cello, harp, guitar, and ukulele. In my sessions, I love to create opportunities for my clients to develop a personal relationship to their instrument of choice, because it can be an amazing tool for optimizing their growth and well-being. I believe through personal experiences that when music is present, it is the underlying force that encourages you to grow. There is more potential to growth when music is present, than when it is not! I look forward to sharing in musical experiences with my clients and using the tool of music to help empower, nurture and connect!
